Sustainable collection of felted furniture

How many ways to cut felt to convert it into something practical? Well, there are so many ways to give it new forms using the Stackabl machine. This system helps mix machine precision with the creativity of humans. That’s how the designers use felted off-cuts to make lounges, chairs, and benches. In a nutshell, this specialized configurator software determines the choices made by a designer or a user. For instance, it identifies colors or dimensions and further selects high-quality factory off-cuts. These off-cuts are further cut with the help of robots to make furniture.

With certain restrictions by the configurator, the six designers from Maison Gerard create striking designer furniture. This furniture appears unique and stylish. So, it’s perfect to spruce up the visual appeal of any modern living space. It’s truly wonderful to see how each designer expressed various ideas and influences in form of furniture designs. Each design is wildly different and exquisite.

For instance, the Raki corner chair exudes a playful spirit due to its uneven shape and non-uniform legs. On the other hand, Dulce’s dining chair reminds us of the cake it’s named after – particularly the one with sweet pink filling in the center. And, its sloping ‘shoulders’ give it an exotic appeal.

Named ‘Marbella‘, this chair is a unique creation that tends to give an impression of a rough-cut stone. You would be surprised to know that Marbella was a part of Ortal Sach’s final project of industrial design at the Ariel Industry. It is indeed surprising to see, what started off as a study into various materials, transform into such a brilliant piece of art. In doing so, she also created a chair that breaks all the previously held notions of how a chair should look like.

Now, coming to its usability, let’s discuss if the chair only looks good or if it is really comfortable. While the entire chair has been made to resemble a concrete stone, Sachs has made it a point to instill lucrative comfort to anyone sitting on it. In order to achieve the same, she developed a silicone-based material that simulates the notion of stone or concrete, but with softness and flexibility. In fact, Sachs had to abide by two project guidelines while making this chair, the second of which said that the end product should look rigid while being exceptionally soft and comforting. After reading user reviews and reading into the project deeply, we can only applaud Sach’s imaginative brilliance.

We are already in awe of this design and await its final modification for the market. What we love the most about this style is that it will suit the temperament of an out-and-out quirky room as well as a subdued and minimalist room. What is your view? Let us know!

The collaboration between the Parisian design house and the American designer has been named “Balenciaga sofa“, and features a quirky sofa that screams out Balenciaga’s trademark colorful pattern. The sofa has been interestingly made with garment cut-offs and damaged pieces found in the Balenciaga warehouse. A single look at the sofa will make you feel like a bunch of colorful clothing has been dumped on the sofa. The way the Balenciaga logo peaks through the upcycled, transparent material is indeed remarkable.

At a time when the entire fashion industry is torn between being sustainable and producing fast fashion on a global scale, Balenciaga’s ever-growing concern about sustainability is appreciative indeed. Talking about his one-of-a-kind collaboration with Balenciaga, Nuriev said,

It is important to me to show young designers that you can work with upcycled things, you can execute it in a beautiful way, in the right shape, and with the right material.

He further said that this design collaboration aims to  “elevate utilitarian objects to arrive at something thought-provoking.”

However, this is surely not the first time that the Parisian fashion house has collaborated with the American designer. Last year as well, Nuriev created “The Office” installation for the same Design Miami. In this awe-inspiring installation, he recreated a corporate office with furniture pieces emblazoned with Balenciaga’s San Serif logo.

If you thought alike, then let us take this moment to talk about the newest minimalist table in town. It is the Pelle’s aluminum DNV table that is held together by friction! Although the product is a culmination of a series of experiments into unique manufacturing and hand craftsmanship, we must say we are smitten by the end result. Manufactured by Oliver and Jean Pelle, the entire table has been made out of aluminum, the hands, and the body of which have been joined using a tongue and groove connection.

Talking about this wondrous creation, the designer duo said told Deezen,

We were interested in developing a language for the DVN Table that creates a sense of wonder and surprise in what otherwise is a simple form….Rather than celebrating connections of material to stay true to a specific constructive logic common to them, we liked the idea of suppressing connections and detailing while using a single monolithic material.

The courtesy for the basic idea behind the technology of this creation goes to the Japanese Joinery. This imparts a crystal clean and even surface to this metal table. Custom-milled portions were created to intricately carve the metal in order to interlock and form the hidden, friction-based connections. Talking about their creations one last time, the designer duo said before signing off,

We felt it should be possible to do something that sounds relatively basic. Doing it in metal, not wood, added a level of excitement about the challenge as we would not be able to go back into the piece to sand it out to fit.
